Fraser Island stretches for 123 kilometres with an area of over 160,000 hectares. Named after shipwreck victim Eliza Fraser, Fraser Island was World Heritage listed in 1992 for being of universal significance as the largest coastal dune system and sand island in the world and for its special environments. Fraser Island has a truly amazing array of natural wonders including beautiful sub-tropical rainforests, pristine lakes, endless surf beaches, immense sand blows, cliffs of coloured sands and crystal clear streams to explore. The unique qualities of Fraser Island make it a destination you must visit! Whale WatchingEach year From August to November Whale watch fever hits Hervey Bay. The calm waters of the bay provide shelter for the Humpback whales and their calves as they frolic. Hervey Bay is part of the route the whales take each year after giving birth to their calves in the warm waters of North Queensland. Humpback enjoy their play and are the most acrobatic of all whales and are well known for their whale song. Growing up to 15 meters long and weighing up to 40 tonnes this makes the Humpback the fifth largest of all whale breeds. Visitors to Hervey Bay during the whale watching season are treated to magnificent displays of breaching tail flapping & pectoral slapping.
